Justifiable objections by folk who believe democracy is alive and well

SOMETIMES, in the quiet of our own homes, we sit and wonder if those in authority listen to the thoughts of ordinary people?

Don't they realise that regeneration isn't only about increasing the number of buildings, businesses, houses, traffic congestion?

Regeneration should be based on a town's need. Perhaps improving the existing facilities like jobs, medical cover, sewerage.

Many of us are content just to live in the comfort of a small town. We don't seek additional tall buildings. We don't want to be part of a 'pretend' city or attempt to compete with established national tourist resorts.

Perhaps, Mr Town Hall politicians, we're happy to jog along knowing that the small fishing port of Brixham is what makes us feel at home!

I had a choice last week of either attending the town council meeting or go to BOMVC's rehearsal.

    The choir rehearsal won.

Although from the number of phone calls I'd received from active professionals and concerned residents it was pretty clear that the public was more than ready to express their objections to the proposed development of Wall Park Camp.

Wisely, the town council extended the 'talking time' for Joe Public and the understandable emotions of people concerned by overdevelopment made it quite clear how the town felt.

Now, all we can hope is that Torbay's planners take notice of those justifiable objections by townsfolk who believe that democracy is alive and well!

JUST before 7.30pm tonight, many Brixham people will amble slowly up the steep hill towards All Saints Church, to sit in the ancient place of worship and listen to the fine voices of the male voice choir.

It is the BOMVC's 56th annual concert. Their guests on this occasion will be the Liskerret choir from Liskeard. It's my understanding that almost 100 citizens from Cornwall will have travelled from beyond the River Tamar to express, in music and song, the sheer joy of being alive.

At rehearsals last week, sitting quietly at the back of the Community Hall, the ol' sailor marvelled at the commitment, music and warm humour of a group men reaching towards the advanced numbers of life.

Even when musical director Ron Burrington (Mr Let's-get-it-right) occasionally stamped his foot there was never anything but acceptance from his 'lads'.

Going over a musical phrase or a change in pronunciation they just smiled and started again... and it was always better next time.

After one song, the MD praised a certain tenor's high notes, congratulating his dedicated efforts. The tenor responded with: "OK, so give us a kiss, Ron!"

    It was wonderful.

Because the choir's regular accompanist Sue Linacre is away on holiday, tonight Daphne Murphy has kindly come out of 'retirement' to play.

Again, at last week's rehearsal the lads gave her a warm round of applause that was like a standing ovation. If ever there was a section of the community that shows you don't need politics, football or anger to dictate how to enjoy life... this mature band of brothers is living proof.

Why not wander up towards All Saints this evening and let the powerful voices and fine music take away the tensions of your day?

GROWING older, sometimes we make the mistake of looking back, in financial terms.

Paying for coffee last Saturday it crossed my mind (fleetingly 'tis true) that two cups of coffee today cost the same as a week's wages on my first ship. Another daft comparison was looking at the sofa and armchair in our lounge and recalling that back in the 1960s we'd purchased our first bungalow for a similar amount. Daft or what?

A couple of weeks ago, talking to two ex-master mariners about the cost of living in today's world, I learnt a little about the art of searching out the best deal.

Both men, having lost their loved ones, had reached the age where, for various reasons, they needed assistance in their home life.
